SLEEP APNEA TREATMENT
Sleep Apnea Treatment
Sleep apnea is a disorder where your breathing starts and stops repeatedly during your sleep. The most common form of sleep apnea, obstructive, occurs when the muscles in the back of your neck relax and your airway closes when you breathe in. Eventually, your brain realizes you are unable to breathe and briefly wakes you so you may reopen your airway and breathe again. This can occur hundreds of times a night and prevent you from getting a restful night of sleep.
The most convenient treatment option is a removable oral appliance worn during sleep. Unlike a CPAP machine, it does not make noise and will not disturb your partner. The appliance holds your lower jaw forward and prevents your tongue from falling backward and blocking your airway. In severe cases, it may be necessary to use a CPAP machine to provide additional oxygen in addition to wearing an oral appliance.
